Driving Innovation with Product Teams
Building products that delight customers is more of an art than science. If you think of digital products for the new world, what comes to your mind. For me, it’s tools like Slack, Trello, Spotify over Teams, Jira, and Apple iTunes. What are the pillars on which great products are built? How do we optimize our organizations for customer delight?
The majority of software or digital organizations have these capabilities. Business, Design, Engineering, and Operations. Historically Design, Engineering, and Operations are part of a group called IT. Frameworks like Scrum & XP started in Engineering, Design Thinking started in Design, DevOps primarily started when Operations groups tried to adopt Scrum and did not get too far. Both Agile and DevOps Communities emphasize the need for creating a culture of collaboration. So each of these groups over the years have optimized for their part of the organizations.
Unfortunately, to build a product, we have to have all parts of an organization working together. This causes a natural impedance mismatch and delays. More so many organizations are optimized for capacity or throughput and not for delivering value. In all this confusion what suffers, in the end, is the quality of the product and customer experience of the products is less than optimal.
In this session, we look at the core pillars of product-driven organizations. Then we will look at the essence of feedback loops built-in Design Thinking, Lean Product Management, Scrum, Kanban & DevOps. We also look at how feedback loops are tightly coupled with the product team’s culture, its structure & its leaders. Learn how creating constraints enables higher product quality which in turn increases customer delight.
What you will take away:
- Differentiate between Product and Project mindset
- Learn how to emphasize more on creating constraints and feedback loops with people, process, and technology over getting the methods right.
- Connect the dots between Design Thinking, Lean Product Management, Scrum/Kanban, and DevOps
